Eyam sundial

We went to a friend's wedding in the Peak District and stayed for a long weekend in Eyam. This is the sundial on the wall of the church in the village.

It dates from 1775, showing the time in half-hours, the months and signs of the zodiac, longitude degrees and local times of several randomly (?) selected cities around the world. The text apparently translates as,'Take to thyself a wise mind' and 'Like a shadow, so passes life'.

Eyam is gorgeous, as is the whole of that little corner of the Peaks. I come from fairly nearby and as a child, my parents took us all every weekend to walk in the Pea District and I got so used to it, I forgot how beautiful it is. Just remember, if you go on a walk, that the hills in the Peak District are exceedingly steep...I forgot!

We had a great walk from Eyam, over the moor to Hathersage, along the river to Grindleford (via the Totley Tunnel - amazing story, see Wikipedia!) and the great cafe at Grindleford Station, to Froggatt and back to Eyam.
