Wheelwrights Oven

This lovely old oven on the village green in East Walton, Norfolk was built around 1850 and used to heat up the metal rim for the outside of a cart wheel.

Whilst still hot, the metal rim would be shaped then slipped on the wooden wheel.

Then as it cooled down and contracted, a perfectly tight fit would be formed.

The last wagon wheel I saw was in my lunchbox.
