Palenque

Today we headed to the magical Mayan ruins of Palenque.

The site was began as early as 100BC, reaching it's height around 700AD.

Barely a hundred years later however, came its rapid demise - the deserted complex was then slowly absorbed by the surrounding jungle.

Though the main area has been cleared and restored, vast swathes of this once great city - which even includes an astronomical observatory - still remain blanketed in thick jungle.
