Bryggen

It was my first visit to Bergen so like every other tourist I made my way to Bryggen ("The Wharf"), a Unesco World Heritage-listed site featuring wacky wooden merchant buildings dating back to the days of the Hanseatic League (a precursor to the Champions League). Only about a quarter of the original buildings are left, and they're full of souvenir shops, but it still feels like you're stepping back in time. Being wooden buildings, the whole heritage site is a non-smoking zone. Bryggen had several major fires in its history - which perhaps has something to do with the name of Bergen's football team, Brann ("fire" in Norwegian).
