Roadtrip Day 5: Wet West Coast

Pancake Rocks, Punakaiki

The rain came overnight and never let up. We packed up everything wet and just got the heck out of there. Headed south down the west coast. Stopped in Westport and got the stove repaired (missing o-ring on tube, $4, phew!). Made the major error of forgetting to fill up our gas tank in Westport and found out the hard way that there is practically NOTHING between Westport and Greymouth. I thought for sure we'd run out of gas. Driving as economically as possible we managed to coast into Punakaiki, our last hope. After asking at 3 different places we finally found a cafe that had 5 litres in reserve and we were saved! That was probably the worst moment of the trip.

So we made it down to Greymouth and then decided to call it a day. Our tent was way too wet to use, so we got a cabin and let the tent dry out over night.

Campground review for Wingpig: Top 10 Greymouth
Very nice place. All your modern conveniences. Close to Greymouth city centre, but also on the beach. Looked like there were some tent sites in the dunes which should be nicer than the one's closer to the facilities.
