What's in a name

This was the name of a country lane when we first arrived here where we used to go blackberrying when the children were small. It is now flanked with small housing estates both sides. We were told by a local lady that the name means "The other side of the brook" and certainly there is a brook nearby that disappears under the main road. I am not sure how this translates but it is the only definition we have heard. The name goes well back past living memory.
When they built the housing estates they wanted to change the name but there was much opposition from local people, including new local people, that the name stayed.
