Snipe Fly

Snipe Fly - (Rhagio scolopacea) - gravid female.

I had this blip ready to submit over an hour ago but it has taken that long to get an accurate ID on this beastie.

This fly is about 15mm long.
She is female - both because of the widely spaced eyes and because she was in the process of mating when I first saw her.

Snipe flies are predatory; catching smaller insects in mid-air.

I spotted her at the edge of woodland in our local park.
