Markyate Cell

Another closer look at something I just glance at as I pass to and from work. This is a fine house in Markyate. I know nothing more about it except there was a place called Markyate Cell back in Tudor/Medieval days where a revered holy type, err, sat in isolation meditating and being wise and all that sort of thing.

I think of a 'cell' as being a much smaller place. I think the cell was a hermitage for said holy person. There is a lodge-like building at an entrance to these grounds which says it is Markyate Cell Lodge. So is that the lodge to the cell, or a lodge which is the cell? I dunno. Anyone care?
