The bridge over troubled waters

The iconic bridge of Mostar.

The original Stari most was completed in 1567, and was still standing until the 9th November 1993, when, after 2 days of constant shelling, it eventually crumbled and fell into the Neretva river below.

The bridge was painstakingly reconstructed, starting in June 2001, and completed in 2004. It reopened on the 24th July that year.

The scars of war are apparent all over Mostar - unlike its near neighbour Dubrovnik, there's not been the same level of investment to reconstruct buildings around here.

I'd thought about blipping something that's a reminder of these dark days in Bosnia & Hercegovina's history. However, speaking with our guide this afternoon, I realised all I know about the area is related to the war.

So instead, I'm posting this, the bridge that is a symbol of peace, new beginnings and reconciliation between communities in this turbulent land.
