HISTORIC ROCKHAMPTON HOTEL

Day 18 of our Australian Holiday .We overnighted in Rockhampton last night and this morning spent time at Lake Murray in the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens which is home to 80 species of Australian birds. The Engineer had a great morning with his 400mil lens and has some winners in the bag. We did a walking tour of the old historic precinct of the city along the banks of the Fitzroy River, where I photographed this historic hotel building. Built in 1898 it was the favorite stopover place for country folk visiting the city.
It is an important example of Australian colonial architecture with wrought iron lace-work cast in the local foundry of Burns and Twigg Engineering. Notice the different patterns of lace-work on the different levels of the building as is the case with all the heritage building along the street.
The site was previously occupied by the Golden Fleece Hotel which was built in 1859 soon after the first settlers arrived in Rockhampton.
We are spending the night at Yeppoon Beach 40 Km east of Rockhampton.
