When we were on holiday in March, we'd got a few books out of the library for the weeWeir to take away. One of those books was Tabby McTat, by Julia Donaldson and Alex Schafler - the team who wrote and illustrated The Gruffallo (among others).

It was a firm favourite, and we both love reading it. The simple pleasure of reading a story with a child is something to savour, I reckon.

But the book had to go back to the library.

So today when I got home, it was announced with much delight that Tabby McTat had been bought with birthday money and was a resident of our book box. Here it is as 8:30 on the coffee table.

That fact that I can recite most of it without the book is immaterial. It's about the experience, right?

What's your favourite books for pre-school children?
