Trainspotting In Lorch

Today was a trip in the Rheingau. First to Lorch which was a tremendous little jaunt as we went over the back road and followed the Wisper down. The Wisper is a nice little river, sparkling and clear - and it looked like it offered serious paddling opportunities.

Lorch is a funny mix of buildings; some very elegant and in keeping with the regional style, and others are a mess of breeze blocks and sloppy cement. We found a very nice Weingut and sat on their terrace. It had lovely views over the Rhein (and offering a view of the castle beside the quarry - not so beautiful) and it was cracking weather out today.

Alas the other thing about Lorch is that effectively it's built in three rows. The first is the main road which runs along the Rhein, next is the railway which runs next to it and next is the houses. So it was lovely for about 10 minutes at a time and then the next train would rumble through.

However the food at the Altkircher was fabulous and more than made up for the noise. I can recommend it.

Went home via Schloss Johannisberg (which given the circumstances reminded me of this). That's very posh and probably worth a Blip of its own another day. Ditto the original Gothic church that we stopped at later.

Today's Blip is one the old wine presses that are quite common around here. I think it's got some really nice textures going for it. Probably better in large.
