Slow ... or simply dead?

I came across this slow-worm in the road in Glen Massan, Argyll. I cannot imagine how it would come to be in a figure of eight, unless someone did it before or after the creature's death. However, I don't know enough about them to know if it was dead or merely playing dead. It certainly made no movement while I was looking at it.
