A day long year

Happy 21st B-irrrrrr-thday

So for Nick's (your usual blipper's) birthday, he asked me (his fiancée) for a birthday cake similar to his favourite childhood pirate ship birthday cake, and as you can see the challenge was accepted!

Sian and myself (pictured) set about making the cake two days after I'd completed my undergrad degree (wooohooo, fully qualified, indebted, unemployed, soon to be homeless bum!) and Sian, who is still soldiering on with her exams, took a couple of hours of rest bite... It took us about 6 hours of baking and decorating using a simple 8 egg sponge recipe and humingbird bakery chocolate frosting :) We used curlywurlies as fencing, chocolate dipped party rings as portholes, maltesas as cannon balls and bread sticks for masts. We had originally intended to use rolos as cannons except found you can no longer buy rolos, (since when?!?)

Anyway, it was great fun to make, and very yummy to eat....

Happy 21st Birthday Darling :)
