Coalport pottery painter

Today we visit Ironbridge and the Coalport Pottery Museum. I think this plate was painted by Frederick Chivers (1881-1965) a fruit and flower painter who worked at the Coalport Pottery specialising in still life fruit studies. Apparently the background on his work was achieved by working the ceramic colour with a matchstick, giving a stippled effect. I don't know how long it took him to paint each plate, but the result is stunning. The whole museum was fascinating and now I know what a sagger maker's bottom knocker is!
