Surfing Madonna Mosaic

Save the Ocean was the main theme of this mosaic created by Encinitas resident Mark Patterson.

"Now, Patterson's an internationally famous artist because of his rogue piece of Our Lady of Guadalupe riding a surfboard next to the words "Save the Ocean". .....
The 10-foot-by-10-foot Madonna appeared mysteriously April 22 (which was Good Friday and Earth Day). Patterson and another person dressed as construction workers attached it that Friday afternoon to a concrete wall under a train bridge on busy Encinitas Boulevard, about two blocks from the beach. It took two hours to install. Since then it has achieved an international following, but the city defines it as graffiti and wants it to come down."
