Wroxeter

So, today was the fifth anniversary of our wedding (aaah), and as a special treat we decided to take ourselves off to Wroxeter Roman City. We've been watching the C4 series Rome Wasn't Built in a Day, and as it's only an hour from home thought it would be nice to have a look for ourselves. In the series, they took 6 builders/tradesmen and got them to build a roman villa in the same way that roman builders would have done 2000 years ago - no cranes, no power tools, no machines. It was a really interesting series, both showing them learning through trial and error, and realising that many of the things they do now are the same as their roman ancestors.

The only snag with the villa itself is that there's next-to-no information about the villa itself on site. If we hadn't watched the programme we wouldn't have known what it was about, why it was there, how it had been built, how it works, what it's supposed to demonstrate etc. Think there's an opportunity for English Heritage to pull its socks up there...

Anyway, if you're on the eastern edges of Shrewsbury and have an hour or so to spare, do go and visit. It's grand! (and Mrs BH now wants a portico...!)
