Avalanche

There has been an avalanche on the Otarama Peak. It is very noticeable because the snow line is so high at present, and it is fairly even across the Torlesse peaks. Thanks to my habit of taking photos of the mountains practically every time I see them* I can pinpoint the event to between 4.52pm Friday and 7.54am Saturday. I took a similar shot to this one earlier this morning, with a bright pink sky, apparently due to ash from Chile's volcanic eruption, but it was too dark and the image is smudgy.

The ash over the South Island has messed up a lot of people's flight plans. It happens even here.

*This is not very often because they are covered with clouds much of the time. Yesterday they were visible only briefly.

One year ago (see thumbnail right): The shag that called in to dry its wings.

Edit: The sunset with the volcanic ash in the atmosphere was very spectacular, and the red glow remained over the mountains even after it was dark. I have put a shot here. There was no colour enhancement either in the camera or after. Resized only.
