Cartoon Dad

In December 1937 my dad left school at the age of 14 years to start as an apprentice motor mechanic with Marshall of Cambridge at their Jesus Lane garage. His father bought him a bicycle so that he could get to work and a watch so that he would be on time. His starting wage was five shillings (12.5p) per week. In winter when he could not cycle to work it cost him six shillings a week to get to work on the bus.

After fifty years and nine months service with Marshall he retired from his then post as Executive Director for Technical Services. At his retirement presentation he reminded Sir Arthur Marshall that his apprenticeship papers had never been signed; Sir Arthur signed them there and then. He was presented with the drawing pictured ~ drawn by Marshall's Aircraft Drawing Office at Marshall's Cambridge Airport.
