Hastings

Everyone knows that the battle of Hastings, in 1066, changed the history of these islands and was the last time we were invaded. Of course fewer people know that William didn't land at Hastings, he landed at Pevensey, and the battle wasn't at Hastings but at a place now known - by some amazing coincidence - as Battle but originally Senlac Hill which is more than 5 miles from Hastings.

This picture shows some of the Hastings fishing fleet which is the largest beach-launched fleet in Europe. The weather was foul but I had a lovely day with my cousin's daughter and her partner. They live in Boulder, Colorado so seeing the sea isn't an everyday occurrence. We went to The Britannia at Dungeness for fish and chips and then along through Rye and Winchelsea to Hastings. We had a walk along the front at Hastings because a "good blow" is supposed to be beneficial for one's health. That a vicious wind was blowing dogs inside out is neither here nor there - it was four or more hours ago and I've nearly got some feeling back in my face. They are back to London now and heading home to Americaland later in the week.

No work for me next week so a beer tonight, a gentle Sunday topping and tailing my marking and then a few days away!
