Rhythm and pattern .....

The west facade of the MSPs' office block at the Scottish Parliament is much-photographed, and deservedly. These protruding pods are said to be based on the profile of the Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch (see Blip of June 15th). The rhythm and pattern of Miralles' unusual design is hypnotic. But what struck me today (I was there to listen to a debate) was the crispness of the detailing.

This is modern architecture at its best. Rhythm, pace, scale, colour, proportion - all these things, but plus the qualities of modern materials and techniques, properly used.

And the MSPs I have spoken to tell me they are nice offices to work in.
