Unruly

Ignoring the rules has given me a new sense of freedom, or at least something to do when I am desperate for a blip.

I think it is Patterson's goal for us to discover that shapes, colors, lines, light and dark in their abstract form have meaning. By doing these rule breaking things you can discover abstract forms that you like, that have meaning, but these forms do not have names or tags or life history. But they convey a message to us. And they are in everything that we see.

The next lesson from Photography and the Art of Seeing:

Patterson now describes methods to improve your powers of observation through what he calls Relaxed Attentiveness. I think he is getting into the Zen thing. Be one with the subject, grasshopper...

Basically he is suggesting that you study an object or objects that you like or dislike in a calm and quiet setting and determine what it is that you like or dislike about the thing or subject. Reflect upon the texture, shape, lines, color, brightness.

These exercises take weeks to accomplish. I can't do that now, here.... later. I want to move on to finish the book.

Imagining is next.
