Procession

We were very surprised when we heard the sound of drums echoing from over the fields, followed by the appearance of a procession of these guys, 30 or so neatly dressed gentlemen of respectable age with red sashes (one of them carried a halberd!), flag bearers and some more drummers.
It turned out to be a St Johns Day-procession, traditionally held by walking over the village fields to bless them (this part of the netherlands is, as far as people are still religious, catholic* ). Notice the kid holding his hat :D

This was the last day of my field work.

*One of our tutors noted it was 'mostly an excuse to have a drink'.
