You could hear The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight long before they swung into view. After describing a wide turn from over the Firth of Forth, two Supermarine Spitfires and the Avro Lancaster City of Lincoln performed a ceremonial flypast over Holyrood Park and Edinburgh Castle to mark Armed Forces Day 2011.

There are few sounds more evocative to some than the throbbing purr of the Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 liquid-cooled piston aeroengine - let alone six of them.
