proper food

The Herring Gulls in St Ives live on a staple diet of chips, pasties and ice cream which they steal from unsuspecting people as they walk around the harbour area. They are very good at it and even work in teams with "a distractor", "an attacker" and some "catchers". The distractor will fly close to the victims head to put them off their guard, the attacker will then make a grab for the food, sometime he succeeds but more often he will just cause the victim to drop the food and this is where the catchers come into play swooping down to hoover up anything on the floor.

Fortunately the Black Back Gulls have better tastes and still eat old fashioned things like fish and crabs.

This one had just grabbed a crab from somewhere and landed on the beach by me to open it up. I didn't like the attention though and was last seen flying over the harbour with its lunch still firmly held by a leg.
