Tissington, Peak District National Park

The photo is of Tissington Hall, at the heart of the idyllic village of Tissington, in the great park just off the main Buxton to Ashbourne road. I hadn't been there for a while so I decided to call in as I was passing (one of the real pleasures of living in the Midlands is having these treasures nearby.)

Tissington is best known for its well dressings.

During the Well Dressing season in Derbyshire (usually during May) Springs or wells are lavishly decorated. Using local plants and flowers clay-filled wooden trays are decorated before being mounted onto frames and placed by the well. Tissington village is renowned for its six wells, which are all dressed for Ascension Day. Once known as 'well flowering', the tradition is thought to have originated in Pagan times and was banned for a time by the early Christians - but this is a Derbyshire custom that is very much here to stay. Intricate and colourful, they are well worth a visit.
