My Perspective

By Rachell

Another era

I was just too slow to whip out my camera and ask/steal a photo from the front as this couple approached us. The 'gownies' were all around on Saturday night in Oxford; there were many college balls so we saw lots of beautifully dressed people out and about.

This gentleman had a twirly waxed moustache and a little pointy goatee happening, he loooked like a Victorian about to go for a stroll on a pier as he strided along lifting his cane with every step. I wondered if he was going to lift his top hat at one stage. He was an amazing sight. It felt like we were in the time of Sherlock Holmes.

Meanwhile in the George street area of the city the 'townies' were there in force too; with the girls in tottering along in extremely high stilletoes that mostly looked too big for their feet, and wearing little cheap looking Primark type dresses. It was such an amazing combination of styles and people. But that's Oxford. Town and gown.
