The view from Carn Ffoi

I'm standing on a rocky outcrop of tumbled boulders the size of cars, trucks or even small cottages. The rubble below was one of the twin stone ramparts that, 5000 years ago, stretched out like protective arms to enclose an apron of flatter ground. Carn Ffoi was a small defensive fort, like so many in this area: a natural pinnacle that served as an emergency encampment in the Iron Age. There was no shortage of stones with which to reinforce the more vulnerable sections, stones that could also be rolled or thrown down on attackers - perhaps a neighbouring clan attempting to poach animals or women or children...

Who knows? It was a long time ago. But the view, 180 degrees seaward, remains much the same. Here, looking north east, I like the way shadow has obscured the relatively recent little town of Newport while the geographical features of the estuary and the coastline, with waves breaking upon the beach and the land rising beyond, are as visible as they would have been to the sharp eyed lookout posted on this high point way back then.

I blipped the same view from the nearby Carn Ingli fort last December and the two bear a seasonal comparison.
