The Devil's in the detail

The Old Brewery Tap, Ipswich.

This wonderfully Gormenghast-like setting comes from the juxtaposition of the 19th century brewery with the inn which is at least 100 years earlier. The beer's good too.

look closely you will see that the door pediment is held up by a pair of demons with women's breasts and goats' legs. The old house next door has a similar pair.

The only other similar demons I have ever seen hold up the reading desk at Laxfield church, are again supposed to be 17th or 18th century - and are very hard to explain in a christian context!
