Sgwarnog: In the Field

"Look what I've won, Daddy."

Today brought the annual village extravanganza that is the Baildon Carnival.

Village is possibly a deceptive term for a settlement of 15,000 people, but within the context of the half a million people that live in Bradford District, it's a village.  In it's historical context, it's a rural village that's developed into a suburban ward of the sixth largest city district in the UK.

Geographical essays aside, it was carnival day.  As most British village carnivals, fetes and fairs, it began with a parade through the village. I suspect Baildon is the only such parade that has Harley-Davidson outriders, a connection to the annual Harley fest that the village hosts during the August Bank Holiday weekend.  Thereafter, it is more traditional: a brass band on the back of a flat-bed truck followed by small children dressed as Disney characters. The star of today's blip was parading in her Snow White costume, so we got to walk alongside her for a parade-eye view.

At the carnival field we had the usual range of community stalls, fairground funhouses, musc, dancing, penalty shoot-outs, tombolas, donkey rides, fell races, candy floss and chips.

Snow White managed to secure this particularly fine piece of fairground tat by wielding a large hammer and making a bell ring.
