The Passamaquoddy Tribe

The Passamaquoddy Tribe has a long history in eastern Maine and western New Brunswick Canada, some say over 12,000 years. Machiasport is a very unique place, a place where the coast soothes the spirit and the land heals the soul.

I found this 'leaf' projectile on the beach at Clark's Point yesterday. My grandfather was born on that spit of land across the Machias Bay. Swaddled tightly, he was briefly placed in a warm, wood fired oven back in 1889 because he was so tiny. When I was a child we stayed in homes on this Point for vacations and combed this beach for arrowheads. Long ago, this was a sacred place and one where strong men fashioned seemingly limitless stone projectiles. Tumbled by the tides, now freed by the embankment, they still wash up in our lives, a pointed reminder of those who nurtured this ancient beach.
