Standing stones

So, today we were heading for Tayvallich. We'd been recommended the Tayvallich Inn for lunch by a colleague of mine. On the way there we were pootling around and noticed these standing stones in a field. There happened to be a small car-park by the side of the road, so we paused for a while. It turns out that this completely unassuming spot is Kilmartin, the most concentrated area of prehistoric standing stones in Scotland. There are 25 sites with standing stones within a 6-mile radius, plus over 100 rock carvings and a 1.5 mile linear run of burial cairns. What a find!

So we walked around some of them - these stones are about 9ft tall, and there's about 16 of them in the one field, and we also saw two burial cairns. (we went inside one of them... but came out again, thankfully)

And then on to Tayvallich, which entirely lived up to its billing - and the sun shone. Let me say that again: the sun shone! We sat outside the Inn and watched nothing much happen - I think that's one of the things we like most about scotland in general.

But, time waits for nobody, and we had a hot date in Glasgow with a lovely lovely friend... farewell the highlands.
