day three

spent the morning at castle kennedy gardens. huuuuuuge site, with, as you can see from the above, some perfectly sized plants in it. that's my dad in the bottom left for scale - have you ever seen rhodedendrons that size? wow. ditto the arucaria avenue, ditto the earthworks and lake. we were greatful for the tearoom to collapse in for a spot of luncheon after all that :-)

off on a goat track behind a housing estate for the afternoon's garden. all the way up the hill, into the car park and through the gate it was totally unimpressive. then we walked into the actual garden... so let me heartily recommend to anyone who likes gardens that if they are in the area, go visit glenwhan garden. it's just one lovely corner after another - pieces of sculpture, wandering peacocks, water, plants in wonderfully *right* combinations, views and vistas. and all carved out of a piece of scrubby heathland behind a treebelt planted to give shelter from the winds coming over the top of the hill. i could've spent the day there.
