Life in Newburgh on Ythan

A Norman Castle

Ww spent a sunny day at Chateau Harcourt and its ancient and splendid arboretum. I was torn between a blip of a really ancient tree, the Gingko, and a less ancient castle; the castle won.

Chateau Harcourt dates back to the 13th century and is said to be the best example of a mediaeval fortification in Normandy. It has everything you could want in a castle; dry moats, gatehouse, drawbridges, keep, curtain wall, dungeon, latrines, arrow slits, battlements etc etc.
