Kaka beak

Native NZ flower called kaka beak after our NZ kaka which is a beautiful native parrot. Sadly kaka are also declining as there are many threats to their survival from human activity and from developing in a land free of mammalian threats.

Maori name K?whai ngutuk?k?

Critically endangered and found in only a couple of places one type found only on a small island in the Kaipara Harbour, the other mainly around East Cape where numbers are declining rapidly.

This flower is from a garden plant and it is widely grown, but garden varieties are bred from only a few plants and therefore have a very small genetic range.
