St John's Well aka The Sewing Room

This well is on the opposite side of town from the Tewit Well taken in June. The well is described as a 'Chalybeate Spring' meaning iron rich water and was first known as the 'Sweet Spa'. It was first discovered in 1631 by a local Doctor who used the water to cure ailments. A stone was laid in 1656 and the original pump room built in 1786.

The present building was erected in 1842 and as you can see it now has a completely different use. The guy who runs the business on his own is very helpful and seems to be able to turn his hand to anything.
