history......

Whittington Castle ruins, this small rural community in North Shropshire, England has acquired a 99 year lease to manage the Castle that sits in the centre of its village where I had my hair cut this morning so I thought I better have a look round

It has a good feel to it as you walk around and imagine how life might have been long ago.
One thing is sure: the walls were VERY thick?.. The photo is a ruin of one of the 5 towers.

People have been living on that site over 2000 yrs, the earliest settlement was in the Iron Age.
After that the site was built on by following generations, until in 1220 it became an impressive moated stone castle
In 1115, to protect the English border from the Welsh fighters, the Normans built a timber tower on a large earth mount, a motte, with a lower open outer courtyard, a bailey.
The castle was rebuilt of stone during the 1220s with five towers around the inner bailey
In the early 1300s, the castle was transformed into a palatial home fit for Fulk Fitz Warin 6th &his wife Eleanor.
