The earliest mention of the rules of modern croquet were published in London in 1856 and the first all comers meeting was held in Moreton-In- March in 1868.

The earliest known reference to croquet in Scotland is The Game of Croquet, it's Laws and Regulations published in the 1860s by the Earl of Eglinton who resided in Eglinton Castle in Kilwinning. Games of croquet were often played on the lawns there.
