Lathyrus Odoratus

Montbretia

Apparently named after Coquebert de Montbret, a French botanist who accompanied Napoleon when he invaded Egypt in 1798 and who died there at the age of 20. Quite what the connection is between Monsieur de Montbret and a plant native to South Africa escapes me. The plant is of course a great escapee itself - I recall seeing it growing extensively along roadside verges in the west of Ireland.
