Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Auzoux revisited.

Last Sunday we visited the site of Dr Auzoux's factory in his home village of Saint-Aubin-D'Ecrosville. Today, our last day in France, we went to the pretty town Le Neubourg, to visit the museum where many of his models are on display, together with the equipment that was used to make them. A great day out for anyone interested in the history of medicine and anatomy!

Although Auzoux made his own anatomical papier-mâché models he also bought shares in the Deyrolle company, who specialised in the production of anatomical models made from plaster of Paris. Of the many Deyrolle models that are on display in the museum I have chosen to blip this fine, dissected frog.

The French naturalist Emile Deyrolle sold collections of specimens for the amateur naturalist and a wide range of teaching models for primary and secondary education. He founded his shop in 1831 and moved to its current location on the Rue du Bac in Paris, the former home of Louis XIVs banker, in 1881.
