Circle of the Seasons

Guardians of the Gate

The bees and hummingbirds have been working hard on these prolific morning glories, which twine their way up and around the cedar archway leading into our vegetable garden.

They've been tracking pollen in and out every time they go inside. You can see it sprinkled on the purple velvet trumpets. Deep inside is a pinkish white heart, luring the nectar-eaters to go deeper toward the light.

When I pass underneath, the morning glories reach out to me with their vines clutching like hands. They grow another foot or two every day. When the sun hits them, they glow from within and are abuzz and aflutter with all manner of flying creatures who are sustained by them.

They are especially, magically alive. How very appropriate as gatekeepers for a sacred space like this one, which is nearly at the peak of its season.
