Rev'ing up.

As Campbell and his pals are all fascinated to insects of all descriptions we dragged ourself out on a damp Sunday morning to go the RSPB/Orkney Field Club family moth day.

Various traps had been set overnight and we were astounded at the amount and variety of moths that were inside. I had no idea there were so many or that they were so beautiful. From the big glamour beasties like the Garden Tiger in the pic to beautifully delicate True Lovers Knot and the Gothic all had fabulous patterns and colours with superb names too.

Most of the moths were very well behaved and, as it was fairly chilly, were happy to sit on warm hands whilst warming up before flying off. I was amazed by the strength of vibration from a tiny creature's fast moving wings, almost like a little formula one engine.

If you can find one of these events near you I'd recommend it.
