Resurrection Mary is the best known ghost story in Chicagoland. Legend has it that a young Polish girl in the 1920s went to a ball, had an argument with her boyfriend, and left to walk home. She didn't get very far when she got hit by a car and died. Ever since her death, she is known as the "vanishing hitchhiker". People driving up and down Archer would see a young woman standing by the road near the ballroom, trying to hitch a ride. Whoever picked her up would drive her towards the local cemetery, and when they passed it, the girl would ask to stop the car. She'd get out and disappear into the cemetery. Sometimes she'd even disappear while still sitting in the car!

Today, while geocaching, Laura and I realized that my apartment is right between the ballroom and the cemetery. One day we should drive up and down Archer, trying to get a glimpse of Resurrection Mary. People say she usually shows up during wintertime and around 1:30 AM.
