The Blue Ridge Parkway

Today we met up with our friend Holli, who lives just a couple of hours from Asheville.

She took us for a very scenic drive along the blue ridge parkway, a 469 mile long road that runs mostly through the Blue Ridge mountain chain in the Appalachian Mountains.
Begun in 1935 to stimulate jobs in the great depression, the epic project was eventually finished a massive 52 years later. It's construction helped many jobless architects an engineers at the time, as well as the mountain communities in the area that verged on outright poverty.

Above is me and the missus clowning around at its highest point. There are hundreds of lookout points along the way, as well as hiking trails and small communities.

Click here for a great shot of the road winding through the mountains, or here for a brief history of the parkway.
