Bill The Cat

Monarch of the Ben

'Upon yonder hill there stands a coo
I've just had a look
It's no there noo!'

It's a popular myth that this little ditty was penned by the William Topaz Mcgonagall, poet and tragedian of Dundee, contender for worlds worst poet.

From a little research tonight, it seems that this is not the case, and if he had written it, it would perhaps have gone something like;

'Upon the hill there stood a cow
But upon recent viewing I can say that it is not there now
For it died, most unexpectedly, of BSE
On the 29th day of September 1893.'

Thanks to The Mcgonagall website for enlightening me
