Lord Ninian, Cathays Park

Lots of climbing around in bushes for today's photo, a statue of Lord Ninian in Cathays Park. As with so many statues, I rarely stop and read the inscription. But today I did, and I learnt something about both Lord Ninian and Cardiff itself. It reads:

'Lord Ninian Edward Crichton Stuart
Member of Parliament for Cardiff
Born 15th May 1883
Fell in France at the Battle of Loos
Fighting Bravely for his Country
2nd October 1915'

Any football fans will know Cardiff City's stadium is called Ninian Park - it turns out that the stadium was named after this Lord Ninian. So this statue is not only a powerful memorial of an exceptional individual, but also a part of Cardiff's history. Yet another discovery courtesy of blip!
