Scarborough

I like Scarborough - it has a great history, from the Bronze age onward.

Did you know that Scarborough (along with Hartlepool and Whitby) were the first place on the UK mainland to have fatalities in World War 1 when they were bombarded with about 1150 shells on 16 December 1914?

or that The Grand Hotel, (the large building just above the red arcade in the shot) is shaped in a V for Queen Victoria and is based around the calendar - with four spires to mark the seasons, 12 floors for the months and originally having 365 rooms?

Or that around 966AD, Thorgil nicknamed Skarthi (meaning Hare-Lip) and his Vikings decided to settle in the place they called Skarthi?s Burgh, or Skarthi?s Stronghold - which is where Scarborough comes from.
