I bought the large Gitzo tripod back in '82. Great purchase but a heavy one to lug around. (9 lbs) I have long been desiring a good more compact version, but have never gotten around to shopping for one.
Online they really look good, but it is best to see one in the flesh before making a decision. This means leaving the island, something I rarely do.
And so!!.... Last week my friend shows up with a baby Gitzo rescued from a dumpster. The lower segment is bent (easily fixed). Topped with a Linhoff ball head missing a top plate; this will be rescuable for a fraction of its new cost.
It is unbelievable how easily people discard easily repaired items.
