The moving inn

Two or three times a year I meet up with a former boss, now retired, and take him for a longish walk on or around the South Downs. Today we started at The Plough in Plumpton and walked across the fields via the agricultural college to Plumpton Bostal, climbed up onto the Downs and along to Ditchling where we had tea. We came back via Streat and Plumpton racecourse.

Originally The Plough Inn was located at the end of the runway for RAF Chailey where three squadrons of Spitfires manned by Polish officers were based from 1943 to 1945. In October 1943 the pub had to be demolished as it was under the intended flight path of the main runway. It was re-erected half a mile or so away on its present site. The war time association continues with the pub sign and the memorial, dedicated in 2000, to the Polish servicemen in the grounds of the pub.
