Back to school ...

A back to school theme ...

I spotted this commemorative plaque in the older 'village' part of Hayes in Middlesex.

Eric Blair (pen name George Orwell) taught at this former school in the early 1930's. He completed his first book, 'Down and Out in Paris and London' at the time.

Before becoming a teacher at this private school, he was a hotel dishwasher in Paris and then a vagrant in London.

I wonder if he mentioned these experiences in his interview for the teaching post? Mmmm ... Perhaps not.
